Booking a mobile blood draw is one of the easiest ways to get your lab work done without leaving home. But a little preparation goes a long way toward making sure your results are accurate and your visit runs smoothly. Here's everything you need to know before your Secure Draw Mobile appointment.
Do You Need to Fast?
Fasting requirements depend entirely on the type of test your doctor ordered. Here's a quick guide:
Lipid panel (cholesterol): Fast for 9–12 hours. Water is fine.
Fasting glucose or A1C: Fast for 8–12 hours.
Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP): Fast for 10–12 hours.
Complete blood count (CBC), thyroid (TSH), vitamin levels: Usually no fasting required.
Hormone panels: Check with your doctor, some require fasting, others don't.
When in doubt, check the lab order your doctor provided, or call us at (310) 893-1693 and we'll clarify.
Stay Hydrated
Even if you're fasting, you should drink plenty of water before your appointment. Good hydration makes veins easier to find and reduces the chance of a second attempt. Aim for at least 2–3 glasses of water in the 2 hours before your draw. Avoid coffee, juice, and other beverages if you're fasting, water only.
What to Wear
Wear a short-sleeve shirt or a top with sleeves that roll up easily above the elbow. Tight-fitting long sleeves can get in the way and slow down the process. Loose, comfortable clothing is best.
Prepare Your Space
Our phlebotomist will come to you, but a small amount of preparation makes the visit faster:
Clear a small table or flat surface near a chair or couch.
Make sure the area has good lighting.
Secure pets in another room, they can startle during the draw.
Have your lab order and photo ID ready.
Continue Your Medications
In most cases, continue taking your regular medications as normal unless your doctor specifically instructs otherwise. If you're unsure about a specific medication, check with your ordering physician before your appointment.
What to Expect During the Visit
A typical Secure Draw Mobile appointment takes about 15 minutes from arrival to departure. Here's what happens:
Your phlebotomist arrives and confirms your identity and lab order.
They set up a clean, sterile collection area.
The blood draw itself takes 3–7 minutes depending on how many tubes are needed.
Samples are labeled, packaged, and transported directly to your lab.
Your results will be delivered directly to your ordering provider and, where available, through your patient portal.
